Watch
History of the modern wrist watch
Author(s): Doensen, Pieter
ISBN: 905349135X
Publisher: Snoeck Ducaju & Zoon, N.V., Gent, Belgium
Published in: 1994
Number of pages: 253
Images: Colour
Remarks: "Watch" provides the well documented evolution of the wrist watch between 1950-1993, and the development of the designers watch from the pioneer work of the French manufacturer LIP up to the fashion houses of Cardin and Dior. This book is a one of a kind that deals with rather the "non-mechanical" watches. It describes the history and working of many a kind of battery-driven watch, some successful, others obsolete. It is illustrated with a large number of very clear photo's., mostly of watches from the authors own collection. More information about the book can be found on this homepage.

Alles over horloges
Author(s): Lassaussois, Jean; Gilles, Lhote
ISBN: 9036611288
Publisher: Rebo Productions
Published in: 1995
Original Title: L'univers des montres
Number of pages: 141
Images: Colour
Remarks: This is a fine example of a bad book. Whether it has been translated poorly, or the original was already off, remains to be seen. The book deals with a number of individual vintage wrist watches in no particular order, and describes a number of modern wrist watches by some of the leading watch brands (such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breguet, A. Lang & Söhne and Zenith). Although the book is beautifully illustrated, a closer look learns that wrong descriptions are given with th photo's, some photo's are shown twice or occasionally three times, every time with a different description. Some of the facts stated are simply not true. This book is alright if you want it for the pictures, but of no use as an information source. But then again, the price is rather low...

The best of time
Rolex, an unauthorized history
Author(s): Dowling, James M.; Hess, Jeffrey P.
ISBN: 0764300113
Publisher: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.
Published in: 1996
Number of pages: 392
Images: Colour
Remarks: A very fine example of a good book. This book about the Rolex watch company covers it all. Detailed technical descriptions, and elaborate historical overview of the company, an overview of almost all the models they produced, articles about how to recognise a fake Rolex (very handy indeed) and of course a price list. Plus an enormous amount of photo's incolour, of course. Beside being VERY complete, this book is very readable with an interesting way of writing and a sense of humour. A standard piece, also according to people of Rolex in Geneva!

Rolex
Author(s): Gordon, George
ISBN: 9627359017
Publisher: Zie Yongder Co., Ltd.
Published in: 1989
Number of pages: 311
Images: Colour
Remarks: The purpous of this book is a little obscure. It is very well edited, and looks very poch with lots of gold on the cover and a very lush box cover, but the information within the book is rather poor. There is a very brief description of Rolex watches and company in the beginning of the book, but consists of only pictures with a brief description further on. The illustrations are of very high quality, and there is a handy model description in the back section. A very interesting book if you can get it cheaply at some sale or other, but not nearly as interesting as Dowling and Hess's book about Rolex. Mixed emotions with this one.

Complete price guide to Watches - 1996
The Professional Standard
Author(s): Shugart, Cooksey; Gilbert, Richard E.
ISBN: 0891457089
Publisher: Cooksey Shugart Publications
Published in: 1996
Number of pages: 1100
Images: B & W
Remarks: This book is regarded by many as a standard work for watch collectors, both wrist watches and pocket watches. Supposedly with over 10,000 watches listed and with 7,000 illustrations. Beside the price lists of wrist- and pocket watches, there are a number of technical descriptions spread through the book, as well as a number of production date lists. A few things make that this book is not MY watch bible. The images are often not too good (small and poor quality), and occasionally, the quotes are a little to a lot off. True, I am using the 1996 edition, but even then the prices were often way under the value. Maybe it is a market difference: the authors are watch dealers from the States, and I am in Europe…

Wristwatches Armbanduhren Montres-bracelets
Author(s): Brunner, Gisbert L.; Pfeiffer-Belli, Christian
ISBN: 3829006608
Publisher: Könemann
Published in: 1999
Number of pages: 512
Images: Colour
Remarks: Another affordable book about wristwatches. What makes this book very interesting is the fact that not only the well-known, high-end brands are discussed, but also the smaller ones like Tissot, Cyma, Mido and Enicar. The book contains lots of pictures and texts in English, French and German. This book is highly recommended for its price.

A concise guide to Military Timepieces 1880-1990
Author(s): Wesolowski, Z.M.
ISBN: 1-86126-304-X
Publisher: Crowood
Published in: 1996
Number of pages: 192
Images: B & W
Remarks: Excellent book that gives a general overview of military timepieces from 1880 till 1990. Short and illustrative descriptions of particular watches, with clear photographs. Although this book does not cover all military timepieces, and the descriptive text could be more elaborate, I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in military timepieces from a collector's point of view.
